Avoiding grey seal depredation in the Baltic Sea while increasing catch rates of cod

چکیده

The escalating conflict between gillnet fisheries and the growing seal populations in Baltic Sea has increased need to reduce direct effects form of reduced or damaged catches. This study describes design catch rates 20 different safe cod (Gadus morhua) pot designs suitable for Sea. Catches numbers individuals total weight were recorded 2762 hauls with pots varying terms size, shape, number entrances, entrance length, placement relation sea floor holding chamber. aim was investigate how soak times affected under similar conditions. Volume time significantly positively correlated round bottom-standing a fish chamber, funnels 5 entrances had highest rates. findings are important development pots, which can allow fishers continue fishing areas high density static gear hence low-carbon emission minimum bycatch marine mammals birds.

Could Seals Prevent Cod Recovery in the Baltic Sea?

Fish populations are increasingly affected by multiple human and natural impacts including exploitation, eutrophication, habitat alteration and climate change. As a result many collapsed populations may have to recover in ecosystems whose structure and functioning differ from those in which they were formerly productive and supported sustainable fisheries. Here we investigate how a cod (Gadus m...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Decreasing ice coverage will reduce the breeding success of Baltic grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) females.

Baltic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) alternate between land and ice breeding, depending on ice conditions. We show that the fitness of grey seal females in terms of pup mortality and quality is reduced when breeding on land as compared with ice. The mean preweaning mortality rate on land was 21.1% (range 0% to 31.6%), and correlated with birth density (range 0.5-5.2 pups 100 m(-2)). The mean ...

By-Catch of Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus) in Baltic Fisheries—A Bayesian Analysis of Interview Survey

Baltic seals are recovering after a population decline. The increasing seal stocks cause notable damage to fisheries in the Baltic Sea, with an unknown number of seals drowning in fishing gear every year. Thus, sustainable seal management requires updated knowledge of the by-catch of seals--the number of specimens that die in fishing gear. We analyse the by-catch of grey seals (Halichoerus gryp...

Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the cod spawning environment in the Bornholm Basin, Baltic Sea

The present study quantifies the spatial heterogeneity of the environmental conditions associated with successful spawning by cod Gadus morhua in the Bornholm Basin. Quarterly means from 1989 to 2003 of the thickness of reproductive volume that enabled egg survival indicate that most favourable spawning conditions were located in the central area, inside the 80 m isobath. On average, spatial pa...
